Tesla's Cybercab officially opened to the public on September 3 in Austin, with attendees able to request a ride on the same day. The vehicle has no steering wheel or pedals and seats only two people, with a starting price of $25,000. The real game-changer lies not in the car itself, but in two sets of costs: according to Morgan Stanley’s calculations, the operating cost per mile is $0.81 for Tesla, $1.43 for Waymo, and $1.71 for traditional ride-hailing services; in terms of vehicle cost, Waymo’s sixth-generation model is approximately $125,000 and the fifth-generation about $200,000, while the Cybercab is priced at $25,000. On the same day, Tesla also launched a commercial purchase intent form, aiming to enable third parties to buy and operate the vehicles.

The per-unit cost, according to Morgan Stanley's estimate, is approximately $200,000 for Waymo’s fifth-generation Jaguar I-PACE and about $125,000 for its sixth-generation Ojai, with the base vehicle sourced from Zeekr at around $38,000 and the sixth-generation autonomous driving hardware costing less than $20,000—a reduction of over 50% compared to the previous generation.
Robotaxis currently operate in seven metropolitan areas: Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Tampa, Orlando, and the San Francisco Bay Area, with Miami, Houston, and Dallas having removed in-vehicle safety operators.
In Q2, paid miles amounted to approximately 700,000, compared to about 1.1 million in Q1, a 36% sequential decline; Musk explained that this is because the company needs to first accumulate model-specific miles using Cybercabs equipped with steering wheels and pedals. On the same day, Tesla launched a commercial purchase interest form to begin collecting interest from third-party fleets for purchasing and operating.

Starting from one city, then expanding to ten cities, and with more operators joining, Cybercab is turning the concept of scaled autonomous driving into a roadmap. On the day of the launch, the stock rose as much as 6% intraday—market participants may be revaluing this new growth trajectory, moving from “building cars” to “building an autonomous driving platform.”
