Tesla unveils Cybercab in Austin, featuring no steering wheel or pedals, operating at 0.84 RMB per kilometer.

Huo Xing Finance reports that on September 3 local time, Tesla held the Cybercab launch event in Austin, Texas. The vehicle is a mass-produced model designed for autonomous driving scenarios, eliminating the steering wheel, pedals, and traditional rearview mirrors, featuring a two-seat layout with full driving control managed by Tesla’s autonomous software. The Cybercab was first unveiled as a concept vehicle at the “We, Robot” event in October 2024; the first production unit rolled off the assembly line at Tesla’s Texas Gigafactory in February this year, with mass production beginning in April—approximately 18 months from concept to production. The vehicle relies on eight high-definition cameras for environmental perception and completes driving decisions through an end-to-end neural network, without requiring LiDAR or high-definition maps. According to Tesla, as of September 2026, the global fleet has accumulated over 22.5 billion kilometers of assisted driving. In terms of energy efficiency, it is expected to travel 9.8 kilometers per kilowatt-hour, consuming approximately 10.2 kWh per 100 kilometers. The curb weight is 1,412 kg, equipped with a 47.6 kWh battery pack and a 163 kW motor, offering a laboratory-tested range of 673 kilometers. After scaling up for ride-hailing operations, the cost per mile could drop to $0.20, equivalent to approximately RMB 0.84 per kilometer. The Cybercab will be displayed in multiple cities including Beijing and Shanghai starting mid-September; this exhibition does not involve sales in China nor indicate that Tesla will commence commercial autonomous ride-hailing operations domestically.
