Tesla's robotaxi fleet has reached 1 million unsupervised autonomous miles, as reported in on-chain news. The update came on September 3, 2026, after the fleet expanded to six cities in Texas and Florida. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s AI VP, announced the progress at a Cybercab event, where the wheelless Cybercab was also revealed. Around 200 vehicles are now operating without human oversight, with no major safety incidents recorded. The development is a key point in AI + crypto news, showing how autonomous tech and blockchain innovation are moving in parallel.

Tesla’s robotaxi fleet has now logged over 1 million miles of fully unsupervised autonomous driving, a milestone the company announced on September 3, 2026. To put the pace in perspective: Tesla reported 380,000 unsupervised miles during its Q2 earnings call on July 22. That means roughly 620,000 miles were added in about six weeks.

The acceleration came after Tesla transitioned most of its operations outside the San Francisco Bay Area from having in-vehicle safety monitors to fully driverless operation.

From Austin to six cities in a year

Tesla’s robotaxi service first launched in Austin around June 2025 with safety drivers behind the wheel. The company gradually removed human oversight, shifting to unsupervised operations in early 2026.

Since then, the service has expanded into Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa. Six cities across two states, Texas and Florida, now host Tesla’s autonomous rides.

The fleet itself remains modest. Tesla is running approximately 200-plus unsupervised vehicles, a number that looks tiny next to Waymo’s fleet, which counts thousands of autonomous cars across its operational territory.

Tesla’s AI VP Ashok Elluswamy highlighted the achievement during a Cybercab event that doubled as a product showcase. The event also served as the public debut of Tesla’s steering-wheel-free Cybercab vehicle, a purpose-built autonomous pod that the company has begun integrating into its fleet.

Cybercab production is underway at Giga Texas, with the new vehicles entering operations starting the same day as the million-mile announcement.

The safety question

Tesla says it has recorded no major safety incidents across the entire stretch of autonomous operation. Some isolated incidents have been documented, though Tesla has not detailed their severity or nature. For context, the average American driver experiences a police-reported crash roughly once every 500,000 miles.

Tesla’s operational domains are still relatively limited. Warm-weather cities with wide roads and predictable traffic patterns are among the easier environments for autonomous vehicles. Waymo, by comparison, has accumulated tens of millions of autonomous miles across more varied and challenging geographies, including San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles.

What this means for the robotaxi race

Tesla’s strategy diverges fundamentally from Waymo’s. Waymo uses lidar-equipped vehicles that cost significantly more per unit but provide redundant sensor coverage. Tesla relies on cameras and neural networks, a cheaper hardware stack that theoretically makes fleet expansion less capital-intensive.

The Cybercab integration adds another variable. A vehicle built from the ground up for autonomous operation, with no steering wheel and no pedals, means every mile a Cybercab drives is, by definition, an unsupervised mile.

Tesla has reportedly shown substantial growth in paid rides, but the company has not disclosed specific revenue figures from the robotaxi service.
