Tesla’s Cybercab officially rolled onto public roads in Austin, Texas on September 3, making it the first purpose-built robotaxi from the company to carry real passengers. The two-seater vehicle has no steering wheel and no pedals.
The launch event was an invite-only affair, noticeably more restrained than the theatrical “We, Robot” reveal back in October 2024.
What the Cybercab actually is
Think of it as a two-passenger pod built from the ground up around Tesla’s Full Self-Driving technology. There’s no option to grab the wheel if things get weird, because there is no wheel. No pedals either.
Production began at Gigafactory Texas earlier in 2026, and as of the launch event, 45 Cybercabs were registered in the state. That’s part of a broader fleet of roughly 420 autonomous vehicles operating in Texas, a number that includes the Model Y vehicles Tesla has been using for its robotaxi service since June 2025.
The June 2025 launch used existing Tesla models retrofitted for autonomous duty. The Cybercab is the first vehicle in Tesla’s lineup designed exclusively for driverless operation.
Tesla also highlighted a milestone during the event: 1 million unsupervised autonomous miles driven across its entire fleet. For context, Waymo, the Alphabet-owned competitor that has been running commercial robotaxi services in multiple cities, crossed 10 million miles years ago. Tesla is playing catch-up on road-tested experience, but it’s doing so with a fundamentally different technological approach, relying on cameras and AI rather than lidar sensors.
Market reaction and investor calculus
Wall Street liked what it saw. Tesla shares climbed more than 5% on launch day.
Tesla has indicated it plans to use dynamic pricing for the service, adjusting fares based on demand, similar to how Uber and Lyft operate today.
The rollout is geofenced, meaning Cybercabs operate only within a defined area of Austin. Forty-five cars in one city is a proof of concept, not a business model.
The regulatory gauntlet
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced plans to evaluate the Cybercab rollout’s compliance with federal rules. That’s notable because current federal motor vehicle safety standards were written with the assumption that a human sits behind a steering wheel.
Texas has been among the most permissive states for autonomous vehicle testing and deployment, which is precisely why Tesla chose Austin as its proving ground.
Waymo already operates commercial robotaxi services in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin itself. Cruise, despite its high-profile stumbles in 2023 and 2024, is also working to re-enter the market.
