Tesla cut its 2026 capital spending forecast by $5 billion, sparking fresh AI + crypto news chatter. The firm now expects $20 billion in CapEx versus $25 billion previously. GLJ Research’s Gordon Johnson raised concerns about the AI investment cycle, citing the cut’s timing and size. Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja linked the shift to better capital efficiency but pointed to future project announcements, including Robotaxis and a semiconductor plant. Elon Musk highlighted the Terafab project could demand over $100 billion long-term. Q3 revenue hit $28.05 billion, with 1.74 million active FSD subscriptions.

Tesla reduced projected capital spending for 2026 by 20%, from $25 billion to about $20 billion. GLJ Research CEO Gordon Johnson questioned whether the $5 billion reduction has broader significance for the AI investment cycle. Johnson said Tesla's third-quarter capital spending totaled $4.7 billion, falling $3.2 billion short of Wall Street consensus.

Johnson wrote that many AI bulls have argued that the first hyperscaler capital spending cut would mark the end of the AI trade. Johnson asked whether Tesla should qualify as a junior hyperscaler. Johnson's argument focused on the reduction's size and timing, alongside quarterly spending below expectations.

Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja confirmed the lower current-year guidance and attributed the change to efficient capital deployment. However, Taneja said capital spending would continue increasing over the next few years. Taneja linked that expansion to additional Robotaxis, greater Optimus capacity, solar manufacturing, more AI computing purchases and development of a semiconductor fabrication plant. Tesla identifies AI computing infrastructure as an area needing future investment and continues to project higher investment beyond 2026.

CEO Elon Musk said the Terafab semiconductor project alone would need tens of billions of dollars through early 2028. Musk said the project's long-term capital requirements could exceed $100 billion.

Tesla produced more than $1.5 billion in free cash flow during the quarter. Tesla held more than $45 billion in cash and investments at the third quarter's end. Tesla also obtained borrowing capacity of up to $30 billion to support anticipated growth.

Tesla ended the third quarter with 1.74 million active FSD subscriptions, an increase of 67% from a year earlier. Tesla also had the largest passenger-vehicle order backlog in four years. Tesla reported third-quarter revenue of $28.05 billion. Tesla reported adjusted earnings per share of 48 cents for the quarter.

Tesla shares traded 1.83% lower at $379.41 on Thursday. Tesla shares have fallen 15.54% year-to-date. Benzinga's Edge Stock Rankings show positive short- and medium-term price trends for TSLA. However, the rankings show a negative long-term price trend and a poor value score.
