Strategy, the software-turned-Bitcoin-treasury company formerly known as MicroStrategy, has disclosed holdings of 840,447 BTC with a total purchase price of $63.36–63.4 billion as of mid-August 2026. That figure cements its position as the single largest corporate holder of Bitcoin on the planet.
At an average acquisition cost of roughly $75,385 per Bitcoin, Strategy’s position represents close to 4% of the hard-capped 21 million Bitcoin that will ever exist.
The numbers behind the position
Bitcoin trading around $77,000 as of mid-August 2026 means the position carried unrealized gains of approximately $1.4 billion, a meaningful recovery from deeper losses the firm absorbed following Bitcoin’s all-time high in October 2025.
As of August 16, 2026, Strategy’s cash and liquid holdings reached $4.8 billion, boosted in part by share sales that generated $333.7 million. That reserve climbed roughly $150 million in a single week.
Since May 2026, the company has sold a cumulative 6,948 BTC for approximately $432.5 million. In the week leading up to August 9 alone, it offloaded 1,690 BTC for $108.6 million. The proceeds have gone primarily toward preferred stock buybacks and dividend obligations.
A strategic pivot, not a retreat
Selling roughly 6,948 BTC from a stack of 840,447 is less than 0.83% of total holdings. Strategy has now demonstrated it will use its Bitcoin treasury as a live financial instrument rather than a vault it refuses to open.
The capital raised has been channeled into preferred stock activity, which functions somewhat like a company paying a fixed dividend on a class of shares that sit above common equity in the repayment hierarchy. Building a $4.8 billion cash reserve while Bitcoin trades near cost basis is one way to keep those investors comfortable.
