HuoXing Finance reports that StepFun, an AI startup backed by Tencent, has launched the STEPX Neo smartphone, featuring an AI agent natively integrated into the operating system rather than as an external app. Pre-orders for the device began on the evening of October 13 at a price of RMB 3,999 (approximately $560), with first sales starting on October 16 through JD.com, Tmall, and Douyin. Users no longer need to open ride-hailing apps, enter destinations, or select vehicles—simply stating the destination allows the AI agent to autonomously complete all subsequent steps. At the launch event, StepFun stated that in the age of AI agents, AI is no longer an add-on feature for smartphones but the product itself. The device runs Step AOS 1, a system designed from the ground up for AI agents, featuring long-term memory, task orchestration, and security controls, built from a hybrid of Android, Linux, and real-time operating system components. The system breaks down functions such as messages, apps, files, and settings into modular components accessible directly by AI agents via the MCP protocol, offering users two entry points: a traditional app grid and an AI agent workspace. The AI agent is named Amoo, which maintains two types of memory: user preferences and task execution history. Simple commands are processed by on-device small models, some of which can operate offline, while complex cross-app requests are handled by cloud-based large models. A secondary MiniLED screen on the back of the device displays Amoo’s execution status. Nearly 100 companies and products—including Alipay, Tencent, Ctrip, Didi, and Meituan—have integrated with Amoo; payments, travel bookings, and content creation continue to be handled by their respective platforms. This approach serves as an alternative to ByteDance’s DouBao, which previously relied on screen reading and simulated clicks and faced widespread blocking by major apps. StepFun was founded in 2023 by Jiang Daxin, former vice president of Microsoft. The company’s self-developed flagship large model, Step 5 Preview, was released in September with 600 billion parameters and 27 billion active parameters per inference, supporting up to 1 million tokens of context. Earlier this year, Step 3.5 Flash was open-sourced under the Apache 2.0 license. The RMB 3,999 price includes a 12-month STEPX Token plan, providing 100 billion tokens per month; fees for AI usage after the first year have not yet been disclosed.
