Stablecoin transaction volume surged to $48.2 billion in Q1–Q3 2026, a 45% year-over-year increase, according to MarsBit. Daily transaction volume exceeded $1 billion, rising 71% from the same period last year. Despite this growth, the total stablecoin supply remained flat at $305 billion as of September 30, 2026. Adoption was driven by real-world use cases such as cross-border trade and retail payments, with crypto debit cards and multi-currency solutions from Mastercard, Stripe, and Visa boosting trading volume.

On October 19, according to the latest research report by blockchain analytics firm Allium, the global stablecoin market is exhibiting a new characteristic: a deep disconnect between liquidity utility and issuance volume. Data shows that in the first three quarters of 2026, the total settlement volume of existing global stablecoins in payment applications reached $482 billion, a 45% year-over-year increase; during the same period, the number of payment transactions surpassed 1 billion, surging 71% year over year. In stark contrast to this rapid growth in transaction frequency and settlement volume, the total market capitalization of stablecoins pegged to the U.S. dollar and other fiat currencies stood at approximately $305 billion as of the end of September, up only 0.4% from the beginning of the year. This divergence between stagnant outstanding supply and sharply rising turnover rates marks a key evolution in stablecoins’ monetary role—from passive liquidity reservoirs to high-velocity transaction mediums.

The velocity of asset circulation has increased under stagnant supply conditions.

In previous market cycles, the volume of stablecoin transaction payments has typically been heavily dependent on pulse-like expansions in new supply. During periods of abundant liquidity, massive token issuance drove up reported transaction volumes; during cycles of stalled issuance, on-chain activity often contracted accordingly. Data from the first nine months of 2026 has disrupted this traditional positive correlation model: despite total market capitalization remaining narrowly range-bound at $305 billion, the velocity of capital turnover achieved a stepwise increase.

This decoupling reflects the deep penetration of stablecoins into real-world off-chain commercial settlements. Freed from the collateral lock-up associated with pure secondary market long/short leverage, existing tokens are now being more frequently allocated to real-world use cases such as cross-border trade financing, global corporate payroll disbursements, and the aggregation of arbitrage capital across ecosystems. The increased velocity of money circulation confirms that stablecoins are gradually absorbing previously idle book-value funds and transforming them into general-purpose settlement assets with rigid流通demand.

Cryptocurrency debit cards surge with penetration into small daily expenses

The evolution of consumer-facing payment tools has been a core driver of payment volume growth. According to Allium’s tracked data, as of the end of September, cumulative spending on crypto payment cards linked to stablecoins exceeded $3.9 billion, reaching ten times the amount from the same period last year.

The microstructure of payment card data reveals a strong trend toward grassroots consumption. Among the increase in transaction volume driven by payment cards, small transactions under $50 account for as high as 84% of the contribution. This metric strongly indicates that the usage scope of stablecoins has fully moved beyond the realm of large institutional OTC settlements and high-net-worth individuals, instead embedding itself deeply into high-frequency everyday retail networks such as dining, retail, and streaming subscriptions—marking a transformative shift from large-scale financial transfers to granular, everyday payment channels.

The three traditional payment giants are accelerating their convergence into on-chain settlement networks.

The underlying architecture overhaul by leading financial technology firms and card networks has created compliant channels for high-frequency stablecoin transactions. Mastercard has officially integrated its previously acquired stablecoin settlement provider, BVNK, to launch the Global Money Platform, fully connecting traditional fiat currency accounts, stablecoin balance exchanges, and card settlement mechanisms through a unified API.

Meanwhile, Stripe has partnered with blockchain financial institution Plasma to deploy multi-currency payment cards, enabling seamless conversion between USD, EUR, and major Latin American fiat currencies such as the Brazilian Real, Mexican Peso, and Colombian Peso, as well as compliant stablecoins. Visa is also advancing the commercialization of its Visa Direct stablecoin pre-funding solution, with payment orchestration provider Inyo Global率先 opening production access to global fintech companies and remittance providers. Traditional payment giants are accelerating the integration and encapsulation of on-chain assets into underlying clearing channels that compress cross-border foreign exchange delays and reduce fee erosion.

The first institutional merchant pilot on the Mastercard and BVNK joint platform will launch this year, and Stripe’s on-chain multi-currency payment card for the Latin American market has entered compliance gray testing.
