SpaceXAI, the AI infrastructure arm of SpaceX, is evaluating multiple Texas locations for a gigawatt-scale data center expansion, in line with its Memphis operations. The project announcement hints at facilities with hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GPUs and similar energy consumption. The company is exploring new construction and retrofitting existing buildings, using its Memphis deployment model. Texas’ deregulated energy market and available land make it a strategic pick. Hiring in Texas has already begun, with over 40 new hires and job postings for data center roles. The move could influence local inflation data and energy pricing, possibly affecting Bitcoin miners in the region.

SpaceXAI, the artificial intelligence infrastructure subsidiary of SpaceX, is actively evaluating several sites across Texas for a massive new data center project. The facility is expected to match or exceed the computing capacity of its existing Memphis-area operations, which run at roughly 1 gigawatt and house hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GPUs.

From Memphis to the Lone Star State

SpaceXAI’s existing flagship, the Colossus data center near Memphis, became something of an industry legend when it was completed in just 122 days.

The proposed Texas facility would be built either from the ground up or by retrofitting existing structures. Both approaches are on the table as the company looks to optimize speed and cost efficiency, leveraging the same rapid deployment playbook it used in Memphis.

Texas makes obvious strategic sense for several reasons. The state offers relatively favorable conditions for power-intensive operations, including a deregulated energy market and vast tracts of available land. SpaceX already has significant infrastructure presence in the state, with operations in Boca Chica and other locations, giving SpaceXAI a built-in logistical foundation.

The company has already started putting boots on the ground. SpaceXAI added over 40 hires to its Texas team recently, and job openings in data center development and construction have been posted in line with the expansion plans.

What this means for crypto and tech investors

There’s no direct cryptocurrency or blockchain component to SpaceXAI’s Texas expansion. No token launch, no mining operation, no Web3 pivot.

Texas has been one of the most popular states for Bitcoin mining precisely because of its energy market dynamics. The entry of another massive power consumer changes the supply-demand equation for electricity in ERCOT, the state’s grid operator, particularly during peak demand periods when miners have historically participated in demand response programs.

There’s also the convergence angle. Projects like Render, Akash, and io.net are building decentralized alternatives to centralized AI cloud providers.
