Huo Xing Finance reports that, on August 3, according to S3 Partners data, short interest in SpaceX has continued to rise since its listing, with the current notional short position reaching approximately $23.6 billion—exceeding Tesla’s $22 billion—to become one of the most heavily shorted stocks in the U.S. market. Data shows that investors have shorted about 206 million shares of SpaceX, representing roughly 32.2% of the company’s publicly tradable shares. Short sellers are betting on potential downward pressure on the stock price from SpaceX’s upcoming first quarterly earnings report since its listing and from the upcoming lock-up expirations for insider shareholders this week. At the time of SpaceX’s listing in June, short interest stood at only about 40 million shares, or approximately 5% to 7% of publicly tradable shares. As the stock price declined sharply, short positions rapidly expanded. Since its first trade on June 12, SpaceX’s market capitalization has declined by over $500 billion, with the share price falling more than 50% from its intraday peak. According to Bernstein, this week’s initial lock-up expiration will permit the sale of approximately 20% to 30% of restricted insider shares. Subsequently, an additional 7% of total shares will be released in phases before October, followed by another wave of unlocks after the third-quarter earnings report, with further shares becoming available once the full 180-day lock-up period ends. Bernstein estimates that by December, SpaceX’s publicly tradable shares could rise to around 40% of total outstanding shares. Analysts note that some investors are temporarily hesitant to buy SpaceX stock based on fundamentals due to ongoing lock-up expiration pressures. The market is also closely watching SpaceX’s first quarterly earnings report since its listing, scheduled for release after U.S. markets close on Tuesday, as investors will assess the company’s actual performance in rocket launches, Starlink, and AI initiatives.

Open interest has surged since the IPO as the stock has declined more than 50% from its peak. Bernstein estimates that 20–30% of restricted shares will be released this week, with additional unlocks to follow.
