SpaceX's IPO filing revealed that the aerospace company controlled by Musk held 18,712 bitcoins as of December 31, 2025, amounting to approximately $1.45 billion at current market value. This is the first time its latest holdings have been disclosed through official documents.
Position size remains unchanged
The documents show that the cost of acquiring this batch of Bitcoin was approximately $661 million, with no change in the recorded amount since the end of 2024, and it remains held by a third-party custodian. SpaceX added Bitcoin to its balance sheet in 2021, and since then, limited information has been publicly disclosed.
According to the document, SpaceX once held a larger amount of Bitcoin. Market database Bitcoin Treasuries previously reported that the company's initial purchase was approximately 25,724 BTC, indicating it has reduced part of its holdings over the past few years.
Recorded unrealized losses in 2025
Financial data also shows that SpaceX recorded an unrealized loss of $1.12 billion on this portion of Bitcoin in 2025. In comparison, the company recorded an unrealized gain of $955 million in 2024 from holding Bitcoin, demonstrating that price volatility in crypto assets continues to significantly impact financial performance.
Last year, on-chain data sparked speculation about the size of its holdings, as approximately $143 million in Bitcoin was consolidated into a single wallet, leading some observers to estimate that SpaceX held only about 8,285 Bitcoin. However, this filing reveals that the on-chain identification may not have captured all of the company’s wallets.
In contrast to Tesla's position
While SpaceX maintains a large Bitcoin holding, Tesla currently holds 11,509 Bitcoin on its balance sheet. Tesla reduced its position during the market downturn in 2022, while SpaceX’s latest disclosed amount remains unchanged from the end of 2024.
The company's disclosure did not mention Dogecoin, which Musk has long publicly supported; the filing focused primarily on SpaceX's official financial data and its Bitcoin holdings.
