On June 29, 2026, South Korea announced major semiconductor and AI data center initiatives, with President Yoon Suk-yeol aiming to outpace global competitors in AI and crypto infrastructure. Samsung and SK Hynix will each construct two semiconductor fabrication plants in the southwest, totaling 800 trillion KRW. The government also plans to invest 550 trillion KRW in AI data centers and 81 trillion KRW in semiconductor packaging clusters. Over the next 15 years, these investments will support next-generation memory and edge AI technologies. Amid economic pressures reflected in inflation data, the government aims to double DRAM production within five years, targeting a fourfold increase in its share of the global memory market.

On Monday, the South Korean government announced major initiatives in semiconductors, physical AI, and AI data centers. President Yoon Suk Yeol stated that it is essential to accelerate the development of AI components faster than other countries and to complete semiconductor production facility construction as soon as possible. Current factory locations are nearing their limits in terms of water resources and other infrastructure. The southwestern region is expected to invest between 5 trillion and 20 trillion KRW in the new project, while Gwangju and Jeolla may invest up to 520 trillion KRW. Regarding detailed planning for facility construction, the South Korean government revealed that four semiconductor plants are planned for the southwestern region, with an estimated investment of approximately 800 trillion KRW; Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix will each build two new factories. Investment in the semiconductor sector over the next 15 years is projected to reach at least 30 trillion KRW, covering next-generation memory, edge AI, defense, and other areas. An investment of 81 trillion KRW is expected in the semiconductor packaging cluster in the Chungcheong region. Approximately 550 trillion KRW is anticipated for the construction of AI data centers. The South Korean government aims to double DRAM production capacity within five years, with the global memory market projected to grow fourfold over the same period. South Korea also stated its intention to ensure that the benefits of this growth are shared with the public. (Kim10 Data APP)
