Citing HashNews, Solana is planning to launch an upgrade named Alpenglow by the end of 2025 or early 2026, aiming to significantly reduce the operational costs and entry barriers for validators. Currently, running a Solana validator node costs about $5,000 per month, with 80% of that, or $4,000, going toward voting fees. The upgrade is expected to cut these fees substantially, making it more affordable for participants to operate validator nodes. It will also improve network bandwidth, reduce latency, and enhance validator economics through better block-packing technology, while also reducing malicious MEV (Maximum Extractable Value) behavior. However, the upgrade may raise hardware requirements.
