SK Hynix (SKHY.US) reported a Q3 net profit of $28.6 billion, fueled by demand for AI storage and the mass production of HBM4. Operating profit reached $60 billion, a 632.1% year-over-year increase. The company plans $101 billion in dividends and $144 billion in share buybacks, providing investors with a compelling take-profit strategy. With global chip shortages anticipated to persist until 2030, value investing in crypto and technology remains attractive amid sustained growth.

According to Woofun AI, SK Hynix (SKHY.US) delivered a highly impressive earnings report for the third quarter of 2026, recording a net profit of 39.78 trillion Korean won (approximately $28.6 billion). This figure not only underscores its dominance in the AI storage sector but also reflects management’s long-term outlook on industry supply and demand: the global shortage of memory chips is expected to persist until 2030.

From a deeper analysis of financial performance, both revenue and operating profit reached all-time highs, revealing strong growth momentum in core operations. SK Hynix's quarterly revenue reached KRW 10.462 trillion (approximately USD 75.3 billion), surging 327.9% year-over-year and 32% quarter-over-quarter; operating profit climbed to KRW 8.333 trillion (approximately USD 60 billion), increasing 632.1% year-over-year and 38% quarter-over-quarter.

However, net profit did not sustain the high level from the previous quarter. Although net profit in the third quarter increased by 216% year-over-year, it fell far short of the market expectation of 59.66 trillion won; in the second quarter, net profit had reached a peak of 93.92 trillion won (approximately $67.6 billion), resulting in a sequential decline of about 58% in the third quarter. This discrepancy is not due to weakness in core operations, but rather because the second quarter included a substantial non-operating gain from the Kioxia investment. In contrast, the continuous record highs in operating profit more accurately reflect the operational resilience of the memory chip business.

In terms of shareholder returns, SK Hynix has launched an unprecedented cash return program. The company announced it will distribute a cash dividend of KRW 14 trillion (approximately USD 10.1 billion), with a quarterly dividend of KRW 20,000 per share, comprising a regular dividend of KRW 10,000 and a special dividend of KRW 10,000 from its investment gains in Kioxia. Additionally, the company will repurchase KRW 20 trillion (approximately USD 14.4 billion) in shares. For the full year, total shareholder returns in 2026 are expected to reach approximately KRW 100 trillion (approximately USD 72 billion), including at least KRW 30 trillion (approximately USD 21.6 billion) in cash dividends and at least KRW 60 trillion (approximately USD 43.2 billion) in share repurchases and cancellations.

These measures aim to fulfill its commitment to return more than 50% of cumulative free cash flow from 2025 to 2027. Of the 2 trillion KRW share repurchase authorized in the third quarter, approximately 1 trillion KRW will be used for cancellation, and the remaining 1 trillion KRW will be allocated for employee compensation, which is not included in the total shareholder return.

In addition, the company completed its previously announced 40 trillion KRW (approximately $28.8 billion) share repurchase program about a month ahead of schedule on October 21, repurchasing 24.07 million shares, or 3.3% of outstanding shares, and plans to cancel all repurchased shares.

Woofun AI's compiled data shows that SK Hynix's financial health has significantly improved, with all profitability metrics rising. The gross profit margin for the third quarter reached 86%, the operating profit margin hit 80%, and the EBITDA profit margin stood at 84%, up by 3, 4, and 3 percentage points respectively from the previous quarter. Diluted earnings per share amounted to 54,454 KRW (approximately $39.20), a roughly 58% decline quarter-over-quarter, but still far above the approximately 18,000 KRW (about $13) recorded in the same period of 2025. The net profit margin was 38%. On the balance sheet, cash and cash equivalents increased to 114.5 trillion KRW (approximately $82.4 billion), while borrowings decreased to 15.8 trillion KRW, resulting in net cash of a robust 98.7 trillion KRW (approximately $71 billion), providing strong liquidity support for future capacity expansion and R&D initiatives.

On the product drivers, the mass production of HBM4 and the growth of DDR5 have become the core engines. SK Hynix noted that its DRAM business in the third quarter benefited from significant growth in server DDR5 sales, while HBM4 began volume shipments. In NAND, sales of 321-layer TLC enterprise SSDs increased. The company has signed long-term supply agreements with 14 major customers, including global large-scale cloud service providers, covering more than half of its capacity through 2027–2028, with pricing adjusted according to market conditions. Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, HBM4 shipments and revenue are expected to surpass those of HBM3E and become the mainstream product.

Meanwhile, the company plans to increase the share of its 6th-generation 10-nanometer-class (1c) process, expand sales of DDR5 and LPDDR5 SoC RAM modules targeted at AI servers, and raise the share of its 321-layer process products to more than half of its domestic production capacity. In the medium to long term, high-bandwidth flash (HBF) and system optimization technologies will further enhance the throughput and cost-efficiency of NAND in AI services.

SK Hynix has adopted a relatively cautious approach in disclosing its capital expenditure strategy and capacity expansion plans. The company expects that investments in domestic and overseas infrastructure will increase significantly as its Yongin Phase 1 project enters full operation in 2027.

However, the company did not disclose specific figures for next year’s capital expenditures, nor did it provide updated budgets or production timelines for the Yongin cluster, Cheongju P&T7, and the U.S. advanced packaging facility. The company emphasized that future investment scale and timing will be flexibly adjusted based on customer demand, product competitiveness, profitability, and investment efficiency. The M15X factory’s capacity will be ramped up to its maximum level by year-end to increase HBM4 supply—a deliberate pacing that reflects the company’s balanced approach between expansion and efficiency.

The competitive landscape, risk challenges, and recent strategic adjustments form a complex current backdrop. As a key HBM supplier for NVIDIA (NVDA.US) AI accelerators, SK Hynix faces intense competition from Samsung Electronics and Micron (MU.US) in HBM product development and capacity expansion. Chinese memory manufacturers are also increasing their market share in traditional DRAM and NAND markets, though their ability to mass-produce advanced products remains to be seen. Affected by uncertainty in cloud giants' capital expenditures, memory-related stocks have experienced significant pullbacks over the past two weeks. Although SK Hynix's stock rose over 4% in early trading on October 28, market volatility has impacted its capital allocation strategy. Last week, SK Hynix paused its evaluation of a potential IPO and fundraising effort for its U.S. subsidiary, Solidigm—a strategic adjustment reflecting the company’s cautious stance amid market fluctuations. Over the coming quarters, the speed of HBM4 mass production and progress in customer certifications will directly determine whether SK Hynix can continue to extend its advantage in the high-end market, while shifts in supply and demand will be critical variables in validating its 2030 shortage forecast.
