SK Group Chairman's Divorce Property Case to Be Reheard Amid AI-Driven Stock Surge

According to Beating Monitor, the Seoul High Court in South Korea will today issue a new ruling in the property division case between SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won and his ex-wife Ro Soo-young. The couple is already divorced and now only disputes how to divide their assets. In 2024, the appellate court ruled that Choi Tae-won must pay 1.3808 trillion Korean won—nearly $1 billion. However, last year, South Korea’s Supreme Court overturned the property division portion, citing flaws in the calculation methodology, and sent the case back for retrial. Today’s ruling will determine anew how much Ro Soo-young will receive and how Choi Tae-won’s SK shares will be valued. The outcome has not yet been announced. The AI boom has further raised the stakes: SK Hynix’s stock price has risen approximately tenfold since early 2025, more than doubling Choi Tae-won’s net worth. If the court again rules for a payout close to $1 billion, he may need to borrow money, sell assets, or pledge his shares.
