A Singaporean man, Malone Lam, 22, pleaded guilty to a federal racketeering charge in Washington for a $245 million crypto theft. Lam and his group used social engineering to siphon funds, funneling millions into luxury and travel. Prosecutors highlighted the risks to liquidity and crypto markets from such schemes. Lam could face 20 years in prison, with a status hearing set for December 8. The case comes amid global regulatory efforts, including MiCA, to tighten oversight of digital asset activities.

A 22-year-old Singaporean man has admitted helping lead an international cryptocurrency theft operation that prosecutors linked to more than $245 million in stolen funds. Malone Lam pleaded guilty to a federal racketeering conspiracy charge in Washington, marking a major development in a case involving social engineering, cryptocurrency theft, and large-scale money laundering.

Prosecutors said Lam targeted victims through deception and coordinated an international network that accessed their private information. The case highlights how criminal groups increasingly exploit trust rather than technical vulnerabilities to steal digital assets.

Lavish Spending Followed Crypto Theft

Prosecutors said Lam and his associates quickly converted their illicit gains into an extravagant lifestyle. The group allegedly spent nearly $500,000 on nightclub services during single evenings.

They also bought luxury watches, handbags, expensive vehicles, and high-end rental properties. Their purchases reportedly included homes in Los Angeles, Miami, and the Hamptons. Some vehicles carried price tags as high as $3.8 million.

Investigation Expands

Authorities charged Lam and Jeandiel Serrano in 2024 as investigators uncovered additional participants. Evan Tangeman, another defendant, received more than five years in prison in April for money laundering.

Additionally, prosecutors identified Lam through several aliases, including “Anne Hathaway,” “$$$,” and “King Greavy.” Consequently, Lam now faces up to 20 years in prison. His next status hearing will take place December 8.
