ChainThink reports that on August 28, according to a post on X platform, Scroll’s co-founder and CEO Raza stated that general-purpose L2s are outdated, and Scroll will transition into a private L2 designed for AI agents.
Raza cited Vitalik Buterin’s recent public statement that “the original role of L2 is no longer reasonable,” and Vitalik is precisely the person who first proposed the Rollup roadmap (shared security, general execution, full-scenario convergence).
Raza believes that a generic positioning is no longer a safe strategy, and L2s that do not move toward specialization will be eliminated.
After transitioning to a private chain, DeFi will no longer be able to continue on Scroll, but Raza noted this is not necessarily a bad thing—chains like Arbitrum and Base are already capable of fulfilling the DeFi role, and trading demand is being met by platforms such as Hyperliquid.
He also noted that Aave has announced the orderly shutdown of its deployments on multiple chains, including Scroll, calling it a sign that the roadmap is proceeding as expected, with user funds remaining secure.
The core of Scroll's new direction is "Scroll Compass," with specific details to be revealed in upcoming videos.
Raza said the team currently views inter-agent payments as a real trend, but merely a "feature" rather than a "product," and the company aims to make "early and specific" choices rather than "safe and general" ones.
