Samsung is reportedly expanding its Pyeongtaek P5 wafer plant from two to three floors, with blockchain enhancements supporting the expansion. P5 Plant 1 and 2 will become the world’s largest single-site semiconductor manufacturing facility. Construction began in 2022 and is scheduled for completion in 2030, featuring six cleanrooms and 50% greater capacity. A network upgrade is also anticipated to support the increased production. This initiative aligns with growing demand for AI chips and advanced manufacturing capabilities.

BlockBeats news, on August 19, Citrini analyst Jukan, citing Korean media reports, said Samsung Electronics plans to revise the design of its under-construction Pyeongtaek P5 wafer fab in South Korea, upgrading the original two-story structure to three stories.

This adjustment involves P5 Facility 1 and 2 in Pyeongtaek, which together will form the world’s largest single-site semiconductor manufacturing complex. The project began construction in 2022 and is expected to be completed by 2030, with a peak workforce of approximately 50,000 workers.

Previously, Samsung's Pyeongtaek campus, including the P4 and earlier facilities, adopted a "dual-fab" layout, with each building containing four cleanrooms. If the three-story design for P5 is approved, it will adopt a "triple-fab" structure, accommodating up to six cleanrooms.

Under this plan, the number of P5 cleanrooms will increase by approximately 50%, and overall production capacity is expected to rise by at least 50%. Future new wafer fabs by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix at the Yongin Semiconductor Park and other locations may also adopt a similar three-layer fab design.

Industry experts believe that Samsung's expansion of its advanced manufacturing facilities reflects accelerating growth in storage and advanced process capacity amid rising global demand for AI chips.
