These two chip companies account for more than half of the KOSPI index by market capitalization. The KOSPI had fallen for three consecutive days prior, reaching its lowest level since April 7. On Thursday, the U.S. Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 8%, with Micron Technology up 18%.

Microsoft's stock rose 15% on strong earnings, marking its largest gain in 18 years.
