Crypto News Today: S&P Global Targets OpenZeppelin

S&P Global’s decision to acquire OpenZeppelin is part of a broader push into cryptocurrency infrastructure.

S&P Global has increased its activity in the crypto space since 2021, launching crypto indices and issuing risk assessments for tokenized funds and DeFi protocols.

Adding OpenZeppelin’s expertise will give S&P an on-chain security layer to complement its data and analytics products.

OpenZeppelin is a well-known security firm whose audited smart contract libraries underlie many major crypto projects.

Its code has processed $31.1 trillion of value to date. Nine of the top ten stablecoins by market cap run on OpenZeppelin’s audited code. According to company materials, OpenZeppelin’s tools secure more than $250 billion in on-chain assets.

OpenZeppelin was founded in 2015 and has identified thousands of vulnerabilities in DeFi code through its security audits.

  • $31.1 trillion processed: Total value transferred via OpenZeppelin’s contracts.
  • 9 of 10 top stablecoins: By market cap, built on OpenZeppelin code.
  • $250 billion secured: Digital-asset value protected by OpenZeppelin’s technology.

Yann Le Pallec, President of S&P Global Ratings, addressed the strategic fit. “Our digital assets strategy centers on bringing trusted data, benchmarks and transparent risk assessment to markets as they move onchain,” he said.

“As digital assets and tokenized markets continue to mature, OpenZeppelin’s technology and expertise will complement our smart contract and onchain technology risk assessment capabilities, giving traditional financial institutions and DeFi-native companies alike the confidence to build and transact in this new environment.”

Demian Brener, CEO of OpenZeppelin, also commented. “OpenZeppelin’s standards, technology, and expertise already power the infrastructure behind the world’s leading stablecoins, tokenized funds, DeFi protocols, and onchain markets,” Brener said.

“With S&P Global, that foundation reaches a broader set of organizations entering this market, as well as the blockchain networks and DeFi protocols gaining institutional adoption,” he added.

In the crypto news release, S&P Global noted that the acquisition expands its risk assessment capabilities into the onchain technology-risk layer.

It also positions the combination as an extension to onchain financial products. S&P Global’s brand, institutional relationships, and distribution are expected to widen OpenZeppelin’s reach.

OpenZeppelin will continue to operate as its own business unit under the OpenZeppelin name. Brener will keep leading the business and will report to Yann Le Pallec.

This structure appears in the official announcement as a deliberate choice to preserve the existing operation while integrating it into S&P Global’s broader organization.

S&P Global has expanded its digital assets work in recent months. On September 14, 2026, the company led a strategic investment that extended Kaiko’s Series B funding round to $110 million.

The move built on an existing partnership between S&P Global and the digital asset market data provider.

Earlier in September, S&P Dow Jones Indices and Kaiko launched the co-branded S&P Kaiko Digital Asset Indices suite.

In March 2026, the two firms announced the tokenization of the iBoxx U.S. Treasuries Index on the blockchain, described as the first time a major index provider made a financial benchmark available as a native digital asset.
