Altcoins to watch may gain traction as the S&P 500 entered extreme oversold territory on November 2, with 46.8% of its stocks overbought. On-chain data shows the index closed more than two standard deviations below its 50-day moving average, a rare signal not seen in 36 years. Large-cap declines in firms like Nvidia, Alphabet, and Meta pulled the index down, while the equal-weighted version rose 5% in October. The 0.9% drop in the standard index marked the widest gap since 2009. Nine of 11 sectors advanced as investors reevaluated AI spending returns.

The S&P 500 has just flashed a market signal never recorded in 36 years of data. It reveals something unusual happening beneath Wall Street’s biggest index.

On November 2, the S&P 500 entered extreme oversold territory, even as nearly half its constituent stocks were overbought.

According to Bespoke Investment Group, the index closed more than two standard deviations below its 50-day moving average, a measure of how far prices have fallen from their recent trend.

Yet 46.8% of S&P 500 stocks were overbought.

Since 1990, five similar situations have occurred. In those cases, the proportion of overbought stocks never exceeded 33.4%.

What Does This Historic S&P 500 Signal Mean?

The explanation comes down to how the index works.

The S&P 500 gives larger companies greater influence over its performance. Consequently, sharp declines in giants like Nvidia, Alphabet, and Meta can drag down the entire index, even when hundreds of other stocks are climbing.

October provided compelling evidence.

The regular S&P 500 fell 0.9%, while its equal-weighted counterpart, which gives every company similar influence, gained 5%.

That 5.9-percentage-point gap was the widest since April 2009.

Nine of the 11 sectors advanced as investors questioned the returns on massive AI spending.

Which Stocks Could Benefit From This Rotation?

The emerging shift favors companies outside the AI trade.

  • Energy producers Chevron and ConocoPhillips could attract further investment if oil prices remain supportive.
  • Healthcare companies, including Eli Lilly and Johnson & Johnson, may benefit from investors seeking more dependable earnings.
  • Consumer staples stocks such as Walmart could also gain attention as investors reduce their exposure to expensive technology shares.

However, October’s strong gains already raise the risk of a reversal.

For investors, the crucial question is whether this rotation can continue long enough to support a broader stock market rally, or whether weakness in Big Tech eventually spreads elsewhere.
