S&P 500 earnings are expected to jump 31% in Q3 2026, led by AI and tech firms, which will drive two-thirds of the growth. Energy stocks are also in focus, with profits set to rise 115% year-over-year as oil prices climb. Traders are keeping an eye on altcoins to watch amid shifting market sentiment. The fear and greed index shows mixed signals, with optimism rising in key tech and energy plays.

Wall Street is preparing for another earnings season, with S&P 500 profits expected to jump approximately 31% in the third quarter of 2026. However, much of that growth is concentrated in artificial intelligence and technology companies rather than spread evenly across corporate America.

Technology is projected to contribute roughly two-thirds of the index's earnings increase

The concentration raises an important question: how strong is the broader U.S. corporate sector when a relatively small group of companies is delivering most of the profit growth?

AI Stocks Are Driving the S&P 500 Earnings Boom

Nvidia, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon and Meta remain central to the AI investment cycle, either supplying the infrastructure or spending billions to develop it.

Demand for AI chips, cloud computing and data centers has supported technology earnings even as higher interest rates create difficulties elsewhere.

The divergence is becoming increasingly visible in the S&P 500's concentration, where the largest technology companies already dominate index weightings.

According to FactSet's earnings preview, analysts expected third-quarter S&P 500 earnings growth of 29.5% as of October 2, with technology among the leading sectors.

Interestingly, analysts raised quarterly earnings estimates by 1.4% during the third quarter. Estimates typically decline as reporting season approaches.

AI drives two-thirds of projected S&P 500 earnings growth in Q3 2026.

Energy Profits Surge 115% as Oil Prices Rise

Technology is not the only sector benefiting from unusual economic conditions.

Energy companies are expected to deliver approximately 115% year-over-year earnings growth, supported by oil prices that have risen roughly 30%.

Higher crude prices improve profitability for oil producers, even as they increase expenses for airlines, manufacturers and other businesses.

Meanwhile, consumer staples and real estate companies face a more difficult environment, with elevated borrowing costs and limited pricing flexibility.

The divergence helps explain why the Nasdaq can outperform even when much of the stock market struggles.

Can AI Earnings Keep Supporting Wall Street?

The S&P 500 recently reached record highs despite Treasury yields climbing above 5%, reflecting investors' confidence in corporate profitability.

However, higher yields make future earnings less valuable in today's terms, particularly for companies trading at elevated valuations.

That tension is central to the current stock market outlook.
