Currently, when using AI to create apps, the process typically involves generating HTML, CSS, and JavaScript first, then rendering the interface through a browser. Solaris skips this step entirely: the entire interface users see is rendered in real time by the model. Solaris is built upon Runway’s Gen-4.5. When users click, drag, or input text, these actions become conditions for generating the next frame. The language model determines what should happen next in the interface, and Solaris renders it live. Pages, buttons, and interactive states do not need to be hardcoded in advance. Runway also conducted a comparative test between Solaris and interfaces generated by Claude Opus 5. Among 250 participants evaluating 30 interaction scenarios, nearly 7,500 assessments were collected. For “completing tasks as instructed,” 61% chose Solaris versus 24% for Claude; for naturalness, the split was 71% to 21%. Solaris is currently a research preview and still far from replacing conventional apps. Generating each frame in real time remains more costly than standard web pages, and challenges persist in text stability, maintaining consistent interfaces over time, and accessibility support.
