Rocket Lab announced $397 million in project funding from the U.S. Space Force for the SB-AMTI project. The initiative includes developing and launching multiple Flatellite satellites for target detection and tracking, equipped with space-based sensors and communication links. Rocket Lab will utilize its Neutron rocket for the launches. The SB-AMTI project is managed by the U.S. Space Force’s Space Situational Awareness and Targeting Division, reinforcing Rocket Lab’s role in military space infrastructure.

ChainThink reports that on August 5, Serenity posted that Rocket Lab has been awarded a $397 million contract by the U.S. Space Force for the Space-Based Autonomous Moving Target Indicator (SB-AMTI) project.

Under the contract, Rocket Lab will be responsible for developing, launching, and operating multiple Flatellite satellites equipped with space sensors and communication links to provide target detection, tracking, and data services to the U.S. Space Force.

Serenity stated that the contract signifies Rocket Lab's increased role within the U.S. military space ecosystem, with its core value extending beyond nearly $400 million in revenue to include recognition from the U.S. defense establishment of its low Earth orbit satellite constellation capabilities.

The SB-AMTI project is managed by the U.S. Space Force’s Space Awareness and Targeting Division, with the goal of establishing a space-based system for detecting and tracking aerial threats; the contract also includes an option to increase the number of Flatellite satellites in the future.

Rocket Lab plans to use its medium-lift launch vehicle, Neutron, for the associated launch missions.
