According to sources familiar with the matter, the robotics startup Generalist has raised its valuation to $3 billion following a follow-on funding round. The new capital, led by 8VC, amounts to nearly $200 million. This financing extends its Series B round from June this year, bringing the total raised in this round to $600 million.
Additional funding approaches $200 million
In June, Generalist announced the completion of a $400 million Series B round at a $2 billion valuation, led by Radical Ventures. This latest funding round signifies another capital infusion in a short period, with the company’s valuation significantly increased from the previous round.
The report, citing regulatory filings, stated that the additional funding amounts to nearly $200 million. Neither Generalist nor 8VC responded to requests for comment.
The founding team comes from DeepMind and Boston Dynamics.
Generalist was founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers Pete Florence and Andy Zeng, along with former Boston Dynamics engineer Andrew Barry. Early investors include 8VC, Radical Ventures, Nvidia, Union Square Ventures, Bezos Expeditions, and AI researcher Fei-Fei Li.
Until recently, the company remained relatively low-key with limited public information. As its funding round expanded and valuation increased, Generalist began to enter a broader market spotlight.
The general-purpose robot model track continues to gain momentum.
Generalist is developing an AI foundational model adaptable to various robots. The company states that its newly released Gen 1.5 model enables robots to learn new tasks from video demonstrations as short as 3 to 12 seconds.
According to insiders, the company is currently collaborating with a select group of clients and customizing its model based on feedback to suit specific use cases. Meanwhile, capital continues to bet on general-purpose robotics, anticipating a similar leap in capability for robots as seen in large models.
The report states that Physical Intelligence is reportedly valued at $11 billion, SoftBank-backed Skild AI is valued at approximately $14 billion, and Genesis AI was also in talks last month to raise funds at a $3 billion valuation.
