Rivian announced on October 22 the acquisition of AI startup Third Dimension AI to advance autonomous driving. The deal brings in a 3D simulation platform and engineering team to generate synthetic training data. The tech will help simulate complex driving scenarios for ADAS and robotaxis. Rivian plans to launch R2 SUVs as robotaxis, possibly via Uber in 2028. AI + crypto news continues to highlight tech-driven mobility shifts. Recent inflation data shows mixed economic signals.

Rivian Automotive announced Thursday that Rivian acquired Third Dimension AI to improve autonomous driving technology and speed development of advanced driver-assistance systems. Rivian did not reveal financial terms for the October 22 acquisition. The transaction adds Third Dimension AI's 3D simulation platform and engineering expertise to Rivian's autonomous driving operations.

Third Dimension AI founders Tolga Kart and Piotr Sokolski developed a business that transforms real-world data into detailed 3D environments that developers can control. The platform enables developers to reproduce complicated driving situations and simulate different conditions. Rivian intends to use the technology to produce synthetic training data and improve autonomous systems' responses to difficult road conditions. The technology also enables Rivian to test uncommon driving situations without waiting for those situations to happen on public roads.

Rivian senior vice president of autonomy and AI James Philbin said simulation is central to training and validating Rivian's self-driving systems. Philbin said Third Dimension AI's technology would reproduce difficult driving conditions, improve system responses and accelerate development for consumer vehicles and robotaxis. Third Dimension AI co-founder and CEO Tolga Kart said the acquisition would enable broader deployment of Third Dimension AI's simulation technology. The integration is expected to help train autonomous driving models and validate safety. Third Dimension AI's executives and technical personnel will join Rivian's autonomy research and engineering operations.

Rivian had approximately $5.3 billion in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments on June 30, 2026. The acquisition expands Rivian's internally developed technology portfolio with simulation capabilities as Rivian continues developing autonomous driving systems. Rivian plans to deploy fully autonomous R2 SUVs as robotaxis. TechCrunch reported that the vehicles are expected to be available through Uber Technologies in 2028. Simulated training and testing enabled by the acquisition could help Rivian pursue those plans.

Rivian is due to release third-quarter earnings on October 29. Wall Street anticipates a per-share loss of 62 cents, versus a loss of 65 cents in the corresponding quarter a year earlier. Analysts project revenue of $1.98 billion, compared with $1.56 billion in the corresponding quarter a year earlier. Investors will focus on Rivian's production plans, delivery outlook and progress toward profitability.

Rivian shares have a consensus Hold rating and an average analyst price forecast of $19.17. Citigroup began coverage on September 14 with a Neutral rating and an $18 price forecast. RBC Capital Markets retained a Sector Perform rating on July 31 and increased the price forecast to $16. Morgan Stanley retained an Underweight rating on July 31 and increased the price forecast to $14. Benzinga Pro data showed Rivian shares trading at $11.94, down 0.95%, at publication on Friday.
