ME News reports that on August 29 (UTC+8), Ripple is proactively deploying quantum resistance capabilities to the XRP Ledger (XRPL) to mitigate the risk that future quantum computers could break current blockchain cryptography and steal digital asset private keys. Ayo Akinyele, Senior Director of Engineering at Ripple, stated that the goal is not to wait until quantum computing becomes an imminent threat, but to ensure critical financial infrastructure can be upgraded before such a threat materializes. Ripple has developed a four-phase plan for XRPL, including assessing potential network vulnerabilities, testing quantum-resistant cryptographic algorithms, running current and quantum-resistant security mechanisms in parallel, and ultimately facilitating the network’s migration. Should quantum computing advance faster than anticipated, an emergency response plan will be activated. XRPL already supports replacing the keys controlling an account without changing the account itself, which may reduce the complexity of future migration; however, large-scale protocol upgrades will still require coordination among network validators. Meanwhile, AI is accelerating cryptographic research. According to the report, last month an Anthropic model reduced the computational effort required to break a leading post-quantum signature candidate by approximately 67 million times, further underscoring the necessity of preemptive upgrades to financial infrastructure. This week, developers of Bitcoin and Ethereum also unveiled their respective quantum-resistant migration plans.
