ChainCatcher reports that Ripple has announced an expansion of its XRP Ledger developer toolkit to support the Machine Payment Protocol (MPP), developed jointly by Stripe and Tempo, and the Open Wallet Standard. Version 1.1 of the XRPL AI Starter Kit introduces this support, enabling AI agents to pay for online services such as data and compute power using XRP and RLUSD tokens. Jazzi Cooper, Product Lead at RippleX, stated that Ripple aims to make XRP and RLUSD the preferred payment options for developers building applications. MPP enables pay-per-use functionality: service providers quote prices for requests, agents authorize payments, and then service providers deliver resources. This standard was co-authored by payment company Stripe and payment chain Tempo. Ripple previously supported the x402 network payment standard in June and now supports both standards simultaneously. The Open Wallet Standard allows agents to initiate transactions without accessing private keys, incorporating security mechanisms such as spending limits and whitelisted destinations. XRP payment channels are ideal for high-frequency, low-value payments: agents can deposit XRP once, execute hundreds of paid queries, and authorize incremental micro-payments—service providers can collect accumulated payments without on-chain recording of each individual query. Currently, single payments support tokens such as RLUSD, but ongoing payment sessions are limited to XRP; integrating stablecoins into payment channels depends on a proposed ledger upgrade. This payment software is still in testing.
