Restate, a Berlin-based startup, has raised $20 million in Series A funding led by Singular, with support from Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures. The company provides durable workflow infrastructure and has experienced strong demand from AI agent workflows. The funds will be used to expand its market team, engineering staff, and San Francisco office. Restate competes with Temporal in the durable infrastructure space. This funding announcement underscores growing interest in AI and crypto.
CoinDesk reports:

Restate co-founder Stephen Ewan originally founded the company in 2022 with the goal of providing durable workflow infrastructure, but he did not anticipate that such products would become so valuable for managing AI agent workflows.

This Berlin-based startup originally set out to build an execution engine designed to maintain resilience in multi-step workflows after crashes and network outages, making it naturally suited for the agent era.

Ewan told TechCrunch: "It wasn't originally built for agents, but it ended up being a perfect match for all the issues exposed by agents."

Ensuring durability is especially critical for agent workflows, as these workflows run longer and have inherently more unpredictable paths compared to traditional software.

Ewan said, "You need to make sure you accurately document what you did so that it can be reproduced and yield consistent results."

The surge in AI agents has provided a strong boost to this startup. Ewan said that over the past few months, Restate has secured multiple six- and seven-figure customer contracts. Fueled by this momentum, the company completed a $20 million Series A round led by Singular, with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures.

This new funding will help Restate compete with Temporal, a dominant player in the durable infrastructure space. Temporal, founded in 2019, announced earlier this month the completion of a $550 million Series E round, valuing the company at $12.55 billion.

Although Restate is much smaller in scale, it has already attracted notable clients, including the vibe coding platform Replit.

Instead of building a durable execution engine on top of an external database, the company developed its own storage, replication, and redundancy layers. Ewan said this architecture gives Restate exceptional speed and lightweight performance.

Although many companies often use durable engines for so-called heavy workloads, Restate is trying to change this with a more efficient and cost-effective system.

Ewan said that, in addition to providing durability for AI companies, the startup also serves Fortune 500 clients across industries including finance.

Although Restate can be applied to various scenarios, customers share a common need—once an error occurs midway through a process, the system should automatically find a way to reconstruct itself, Ewan says.

Before founding Restate, Ewan was a co-creator of the popular open-source stream processing framework Apache Flink and later served as CTO at Data Artisans, the data company that commercialized the project. Alibaba acquired Data Artisans in 2019 and renamed it Ververica, where Ewan continued as CTO for another three years. The other two co-founders of Restate, Igal Shilman and Till Rohrmann, were Ewan’s former colleagues from his time at Data Artisans and Ververica.

The company plans to use the new funding to hire a market expansion team, increase its engineering staff, and expand its office in the San Francisco Bay Area to be closer to many existing and potential customers.

However, Ewan insists that Restate's capabilities will soon become essential for businesses beyond traditional tech companies.

Ewan said, “If you fast-forward a few years, it will become a tool like a database—I believe almost any company, regardless of size or structure, will have use cases for it.”
