A new study by Theta Labs, the Ethereum Foundation, and StarkWare reveals that the estimated cost of a quantum attack on BTC and ETH has dropped by more than 50% compared to Google’s earlier projections. The updated design requires approximately 1,151 logical qubits and 1.3 million Toffoli gate operations, yielding a total score of about 1.5 billion—significantly below the 3 billion threshold. The optimization focuses on the point addition step in Shor’s algorithm, which could enable quantum computers to compromise public keys. Fear and Greed Index readings remain mixed, but BTC price stability indicates continued market confidence. Experts warn that transitioning to quantum-resistant systems will take years, not decades.

Huo Xing Caijing reports that, according to a recent paper released by researchers from Theta Labs, the Ethereum Foundation, StarkWare, and others, the resources required for potential quantum attacks on the critical computational components of Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) have decreased by more than 50% compared to previous estimates by Google’s Quantum AI team. The quantum circuit design proposed in this study requires only approximately 1,151 logical qubits and about 1.3 million Toffoli gate operations to complete the relevant computations, with an overall score of around 1.5 billion—lower than Google’s prior estimate of approximately 3 billion. The study primarily optimizes the point addition component within Shor’s algorithm, which theoretically enables a sufficiently powerful quantum computer to derive private keys from public keys. One of the paper’s lead authors, Jieyi Long, CTO of Theta Labs, stated that quantum attacks are not imminent, but migrating to quantum-resistant systems requires years of preparation and cannot be addressed after an attack occurs.
