Recurrent Energy completes the sale of two 100 MW/400 MWh BESS projects in France to BW ESS.
The combined 200 MW/800 MWh project portfolio has been sold to BW ESS, demonstrating Recurrent Energy’s ability to develop and monetize high-quality battery energy storage projects.
Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, October 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Recurrent Energy, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc. ("Canadian Solar") (Nasdaq: CSIQ), a global leader in solar and energy storage asset development, ownership, and operation, today announced the sale of two independent BESS projects in France to BW ESS, a global energy storage asset owner and operator.
The portfolio includes two projects: Baixas in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, with a capacity of 100 MW / 400 MWh; and Coquainvilliers in Calvados, also with a capacity of 100 MW / 400 MWh. Both projects benefit from advanced grid connection points at the transmission level and are built on a robust grid infrastructure with expected minimal network constraints. Together, they will provide 200 MW / 800 MWh of flexible capacity to the French power system.
Recurrent Energy is responsible for initiating and developing both projects, including securing land, advancing grid connection, and managing permits and communications with local stakeholders. BW ESS will acquire these projects, marking their first transaction together and BW ESS’s entry into the French energy market. Recurrent Energy will continue to lead the remaining development phases, leveraging its local market expertise, technical capabilities, and experience delivering renewable energy and storage projects. Once the remaining development milestones are completed, BW ESS will take the lead in constructing the assets and driving them toward commercial operation. BW ESS plans to hold and operate these assets long-term.
Erik Strømsø, CEO and co-founder of BW ESS, said: “We are excited to partner with Recurrent Energy in the next phase and leverage BW ESS’s long-term expertise in owning and operating assets as we advance these projects toward construction and operation. Entering France represents a significant milestone for BW ESS and a natural next step in expanding our global energy storage platform. These acquisitions immediately give us a 200 MW / 800 MWh platform in France and lay a strong foundation for building a substantial portfolio of French assets. France has a strong nuclear power base, but demand influenced by weather and evolving generation mix are creating more volatile system conditions, increasing the need for flexibility. Batteries can complement France’s nuclear base by providing fast-responding flexibility, helping to balance the grid, absorb excess power, and deliver low-carbon generation when it is most valuable.”
Dylan Marx, CEO of Recurrent Energy, said: “This transaction with BW ESS demonstrates our ability to create value by delivering high-quality BESS projects while maintaining close involvement from project development through to commercial operation. It strongly validates the BESS platform we have established in France and our capacity to continue expanding it. Once operational, these projects will provide flexible energy storage capacity to support grid stability, balance supply and demand, and facilitate greater integration of renewable energy into the French power system.”
