U.S. aerospace logistics startup Poseidon Aerospace has completed a $60 million Series A funding round ahead of its first unmanned cargo aircraft, the Egret, undergoing its initial pilotless test flight. The company expects this test flight to be completed before the end of this year.
$60 million to advance testing
This round is led by TQ Ventures, with participation from Hanwha Asset Management, G Squared, and JAWS. Existing investors Starship Ventures, Draper Associates, and Drover Ventures also continued their support. Poseidon completed a $11 million seed round last year.
The company was co-founded in 2024 by David Zagaynov and Parker Tenney, both previously employed at Amazon Logistics and Lockheed Martin, respectively. The company aims to enter the air freight market by focusing not on showcasing new technologies, but on reducing transportation costs and improving freight efficiency.
The first model adopts a fixed-wing design.
Poseidon is developing the fixed-wing unmanned cargo aircraft Egret, as well as its seaplane variant, Heron. Unlike many aviation startups, Poseidon has not adopted vertical takeoff and landing solutions, nor has it opted for hydrogen or fully electric propulsion systems; instead, it has chosen conventional fuel-powered engines.
The company believes this approach will facilitate faster deployment and reduce freight costs. According to its vision, automation and remote control can decrease reliance on pilots and improve aircraft utilization.
Target market: defense and regional freight
Poseidon is currently targeting two markets: defense logistics and regional commercial freight. In the defense sector, the company aims to deploy its aircraft to serve areas with weak infrastructure and limited route coverage, enhancing logistics resilience.
In its business strategy, Poseidon does not intend to sell aircraft directly; instead, it plans to operate its own regional air cargo services, competing with existing air freight carriers to secure contracts from customers such as UPS and FedEx.
The company also believes that drone-based operations help optimize route configurations. When demand increases in a specific region, operators are no longer constrained by pilot locations and work hour restrictions, allowing for greater flexibility in route adjustments.
The regulatory environment is becoming more relaxed.
Poseidon stated that the recent pilot program launched by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration is creating a more accommodating environment for testing new aircraft. Although the program primarily targets electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles, the company noted that the broader shift in regulatory climate also supports its efforts to advance testing and commercialization.
From the company’s perspective, the path for unmanned aerial cargo from testing to commercial operations is now clearer than it was five to ten years ago.
