Francesco Farioli has never managed a Champions League match. That changes when Manchester City visit the Estádio do Dragão in September, and the 37-year-old Porto coach sounds less like someone bracing for impact than someone who’s been waiting for exactly this moment.
The De Zerbi connection
Every young coach has a coaching tree, and Farioli’s roots trace directly back to Roberto De Zerbi. Farioli specifically pointed to De Zerbi’s emphasis on team shape, narrow positioning, and the delicate balance between attacking ambition and defensive structure.
Farioli has described his own style as a high-intensity blend of possession play and defensive solidity. Porto have conceded just one goal across their first five league matches of the 2026-27 season. All five were wins.
Building something at Porto
Farioli’s path to the Estádio do Dragão wound through Alanyaspor in Turkey, then Nice in Ligue 1, and Ajax before arriving in Porto in July 2025. At Ajax, he qualified for the Champions League but never got to manage in the competition itself.
His first season delivered the Primeira Liga title in May 2026. Porto extended his deal through June 2028 in January 2026, well before the title was mathematically secured. Then came the Portuguese Super Cup in August 2026. Two trophies in roughly 12 months.
The Man City challenge
Manchester City arrive in Porto having spent approximately €527 million in their most recent transfer window alone, with total recent spending north of €3 billion. Farioli acknowledged City’s pedigree and investment openly, while leaning into Porto’s home advantage. His preparation has been complicated by multiple player absences, though Farioli framed the emphasis on execution and team mentality as Porto’s path to making the matchup difficult for the visitors.
