Paul S. Atkins, the 34th SEC chair, is steering the agency toward a more rational approach to crypto regulation. Since taking office on April 21, 2025, he has pushed for clearer rules on issuance, custody, and trading. The SEC has reduced enforcement actions, continuing a trend from Acting Chairman Mark Uyeda. In a May 12 speech, Atkins highlighted the potential of on-chain securities and noted the importance of aligning U.S. policies with the EU Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation. The agency is also seeking input on how to determine if a crypto asset qualifies as a security, aiming to boost liquidity and crypto markets.
