Additionally, barring any unforeseen circumstances, OpenAI's Codex Micro will be deeply integrated into workflows.
After all, programmers are among the most efficiency-driven groups in the world and have been the most deeply affected in their work methods by AI. In actual development, frequently copying, pasting, and switching contexts between an IDE and the ChatGPT web interface is an extremely fragmented experience.
OpenAI clearly recognized this. They didn’t need a generic AI assistant button; they needed a physical console that allows developers to complete code completion, error correction, and version rollback without taking their hands off the keyboard.

The common flaw with these so-called AI-native devices is that they attempt to handle everything through voice interactions, ignoring the fact that at a desk, the most efficient input methods for humans are still the keyboard and mouse.
As the world’s most knowledgeable company in large models, OpenAI understands better than anyone else the current boundaries of AI capabilities. Rather than forcing the creation of an AI phone with flashy features that fail to meet real needs, it’s better to return to the most practical use case—the productivity desktop.
If a programmer is accustomed to having a highly ritualistic physical button on the left side to instantly summon Codex, and a nearby dial with excellent tactile feedback to adjust the "creativity" threshold of AI-generated code, would they easily switch to a competitor’s tool?
This small keyboard is essentially an "anchor" that OpenAI has placed on developers' desks.
Of course, if you think OpenAI's ambitions are limited to selling keyboards, you're seriously underestimating Sam Altman. The release of Codex Micro is more like an appetizer—right now, Sam Altman is closely collaborating with former Apple chief design officer Jony Ive to build a true AI-native hardware device.
