OpenAI said on Aug. 28 that it had notified SpaceX of its intention to wind down the Cursor agreement, with a proposed Nov. 12, 2026 cutoff date. The company said the decision was triggered by the change of control and concerns over whether SpaceX would comply with OpenAI’s contractual terms.

Cursor itself has not been accused of breaching the agreement. OpenAI instead pointed to past disputes involving other Musk-controlled companies. The company said it was using a contractual cancellation window that became available after SpaceX acquired Cursor.

SpaceX’s $60B Cursor Deal Changes the Relationship

SpaceX completed its acquisition of Cursor parent Anysphere in August after agreeing to a roughly $60 billion all-stock transaction earlier this year. Cursor confirmed on Aug. 14 that it had officially become part of SpaceX.

That deal followed SpaceX’s historic June IPO. The company began trading on Nasdaq under SPCX on June 12 at a $135 IPO price and ultimately raised about $85.7 billion after underwriters exercised their additional-share option.

Cursor Is Not Dependent on OpenAI Alone

The split does not mean Cursor will stop functioning.

Cursor supports models from several providers, including Anthropic and Google, while its new SpaceX ownership also gives it closer access to Musk’s AI infrastructure. Reuters reported that Cursor co-founder Michael Truell said discussions with OpenAI were continuing, while Anthropic plans to expand Claude support for the platform.

OpenAI, meanwhile, is investing more heavily in Codex, its own coding agent. The company's official Codex product is designed to write and edit code, work across larger codebases and handle software-engineering tasks more autonomously.
