AIMPACT update, May 17 (UTC+8): According to monitoring by Beating, OpenAI appears to be addressing the biggest pain point in desktop AI remote control. Exposed by TestingCatalog, OpenAI is developing a new capability for Codex aimed at enabling AI to continue performing software operations in the background even when the Mac is locked or in sleep mode. Previously, all interface control functions had a critical limitation: the computer had to remain unlocked and the screen lit for the AI to view the display and simulate mouse and keyboard inputs. The leak suggests this new feature is designed to close this gap. If successfully implemented, users will no longer need to physically unlock their screen by returning to the computer when remotely controlling Codex at home via their phone while on the go. Additionally, OpenAI is testing cross-device connectivity, which may eventually allow a primary device to directly control a Mac Mini running Codex. Currently, both existing Codex and competitors like Claude Code are restricted when the system is locked. However, enabling AI to bypass the lock screen password and remain active within the system directly challenges macOS’s default security expectations. This aggressive attempt to circumvent system-level protections is highly likely to trigger official scrutiny from Apple in the future. (Source: BlockBeats)

AI and crypto news outlets report that OpenAI is testing a new Codex feature enabling remote operation of Macs even in sleep mode. The system could allow users to control their devices via mobile without unlocking the screen. Current AI interface systems require active displays. This development may raise concerns about security breach risks and conflict with macOS protections. Apple could review the feature for compliance.
