IT Home, October 13: Tech media outlet The Information reported yesterday (October 12) that OpenAI is negotiating with a stealth startup specializing in AI video technology for film production, planning to transfer the previously discontinued video generation model Sora to the company for its relaunch as a professional filmmaking tool.

IT Home, citing a blog post, reported that the startup was founded a few months ago by Hollywood producer Jeffrey Katzenberg, former head of research at Sora, Bill Peebles, and former Dropbox CFO Sujay Jaswa; the company’s name has not yet been disclosed.
Regarding collaboration, according to details disclosed in the blog post, the startup plans to take over and revamp the Sora platform and develop and sell software or services targeting film and video production companies based on this technology. The terms of the collaboration have not yet been finalized, and it is currently unclear whether the startup will gain access to Sora’s model weights.
Earlier this year, OpenAI halted development of the Sora model and its TikTok-like video application after cutting non-core projects with high computational demands, reallocating resources toward enterprise AI and programming tools. Previously, OpenAI had already shut down consumer-facing applications and web platforms for Sora, and terminated its collaboration agreement with Disney, valued at approximately $1 billion (approximately RMB 6.706 billion at current exchange rates).
