Starting next week, anyone using ChatGPT’s free tier can send as many text messages as they want. No more hitting a wall mid-conversation and being told to come back later. OpenAI is lifting rate limits on text-only chats for both its free and Go subscription tiers, a change that sounds minor but carries significant strategic weight.
Previously, free users faced strict caps, reportedly as low as 10 messages every five hours during peak demand. That friction is disappearing for plain text conversations, though file uploads and image-related messages will still have limits. OpenAI is also rolling out a “Think” button for free and Go users, giving them access to higher reasoning capabilities for tougher questions.
The real play: ads are coming
OpenAI has been testing advertisements on free and Go tiers in the US, which reframes the entire announcement. Remove the limits, get more people chatting more often, serve them ads. The Go tier launched in January 2026 at $8 per month, positioning it as a middle ground between the free experience and OpenAI’s premium offerings. By making the free tier dramatically more useful while simultaneously experimenting with ad revenue, OpenAI is building a funnel. Free users who want advanced features still need to pay, but the ones who stick with free become an audience to monetize differently.

OpenAI itself has nothing to do with crypto. But historical trends suggest that advancements in AI technology, like those seen during ChatGPT’s initial release, have positively impacted the market for AI-themed digital assets.
