According to Beating Monitor, OpenAI has announced the rollout of the third-generation voice model and architecture, GPT-Live, to global ChatGPT users. Free users can access GPT-Live-1 Mini, while paid users are default assigned GPT-Live-1. It decouples complex reasoning from real-time conversation, allowing it to listen while the user speaks—eliminating the need for turn-based communication like a walkie-talkie. GPT-Live employs a full-duplex architecture, enabling simultaneous listening and speaking. During conversations, it uses interjections like “uh-huh” and “right” to signal attentiveness, supports rapid back-and-forth interaction, and remains silent when the user needs time to think. When faced with queries requiring search or deep reasoning, GPT-Live delegates the task to GPT-5.5 in the background while continuing the conversation. It can also display visual cards—such as weather or stock data—to enhance understanding during dialogue.
