ChainThink reports that on August 28, according to an official announcement, OpenAI has launched its second Startup Fund with a size of $400 million, fully funded by OpenAI's own capital.
The fund will primarily invest in early-stage AI companies, with plans to invest in 8 to 10 companies annually. Individual investments will start at several million dollars, typically up to $50 million, and may reach $100 million for suitable projects.
The first fund raised $175 million in 2021 from external investors such as Microsoft; OpenAI itself did not contribute any capital, and the majority of investment profits went to the limited partners.
The first fund has invested in 24 companies, including Cursor and legal AI company Harvey, with all funds fully deployed. Cursor was acquired by SpaceX this month, implying an equity value of $60 billion.
The new fund is solely funded by OpenAI, so investment returns will no longer primarily flow to external LPs, meaning OpenAI will bear the full risk and capture all returns.
