BlockBeats report: On November 4, OpenAI and Anthropic will establish their first dedicated "war room" for the U.S. midterm elections to ensure their platforms provide accurate election information. An Anthropic spokesperson said the company’s teams have been strengthening election-related safeguards and enforcing platform policies throughout the year; the dedicated team established ahead of the election will monitor platform abuse and be prepared to respond swiftly to emerging incidents.
The practice of tech platforms establishing "war rooms" for elections dates back to 2018, when Meta first created such teams to combat the spread of election-related misinformation. Today, platforms also face risks from deepfake videos and AI-powered search spreading false information. One report cited that last week, Google’s AI Mode did not answer the question, “Who won the 2020 U.S. presidential election?” Google stated it is working on a fix.
Unpredictable AI outputs, recent cybersecurity issues, and AI search tools' tendency to cater to user expectations all increase the difficulty of monitoring and responding. Katie Harbath, former head of public policy at Meta, said the purpose of the "war room" is to enable rapid assessment and prioritization of unexpected issues according to established protocols.
