Odaily Planet Daily reports that OpenAI has acquired certain patent assets from AI chip startup Rain AI, after previous negotiations on the acquisition were ultimately not completed.
Rain AI is a startup focused on developing AI chips, founded approximately eight years ago, with investors including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Reports indicate that, following the failure of its acquisition plan, Rain AI has recently ceased most operations, with the majority of employees having left the company.
This patent acquisition demonstrates that although some of Altman’s personally invested companies may engage in commercial collaborations with OpenAI, it does not mean that all invested companies will receive direct support from OpenAI.
Rain AI previously focused on developing specialized chips for AI computing, aiming to reduce the cost of running AI models and enhance edge computing capabilities through customized hardware. As competition in AI infrastructure intensifies, chips, computing power, and energy have become core strategic resources for major AI companies.
Industry insiders believe that OpenAI's acquisition of Rain AI's patents may be aimed at absorbing its technological assets to strengthen its position in AI hardware and computing infrastructure.
In recent years, OpenAI has continuously expanded its presence across the AI industry chain, extending from model development into chips, data centers, and energy sectors, while maintaining partnerships with chip suppliers such as NVIDIA and multiple infrastructure companies. The Rain AI incident also highlights the intense competition in the AI chip startup space, with some startups facing survival pressures in a high-capital-investment environment. (The Information)
