OpenAI plans to acquire Pierre Computer Company, Inc. as OpenAI expands into AI-powered software development. OpenAI announced the transaction on Wednesday. Pierre is known primarily for Code Storage and open-source tools for navigating code repositories. OpenAI said Codex users already use Pierre's Trees and Diffs features to browse files and examine code changes.
Microsoft-backed OpenAI is pursuing developer-focused acquisitions to strengthen Codex in an increasingly competitive AI coding market. OpenAI announced a planned acquisition of Astral in March. Astral develops the open-source Python tools uv, Ruff and ty, which support dependency management, code formatting and error detection. OpenAI said Astral's technology and engineering expertise would become part of Codex.
OpenAI agreed earlier that month to acquire Promptfoo, a startup focused on AI security testing. Promptfoo's technology supports vulnerability detection, AI application evaluation and security testing for companies. OpenAI plans to incorporate those capabilities into Frontier, OpenAI's enterprise AI platform. OpenAI announced plans in June to acquire Ona, a developer infrastructure company focused on secure cloud environments for AI agents. Ona's technology is intended to allow Codex agents to work on projects for extended periods independently of a developer's local computer. The acquisitions suggest an effort to develop infrastructure around AI-generated software rather than concentrate solely on code-generating models.
OpenAI identified shortcomings in traditional Git-based workflows when several engineers and AI agents collaborate on projects at the same time. OpenAI cited Pando, an internal source-control backend serving human developers and AI agents, as part of an effort to modernize software development infrastructure. Pierre's diff editor allows code reviewers to fix individual lines inside code comparisons. Pierre's Highlights tool adds syntax highlighting in real time while developers type or AI agents produce code. These capabilities could expand Codex beyond an AI coding assistant into an integrated environment for creating, navigating, editing and reviewing code.
OpenAI said Pierre's open-source projects will stay open-source and OpenAI will continue contributing to development. Current Code Storage customers will keep access after completion while OpenAI integrates Code Storage capabilities into Codex. The acquisition remains conditional on customary closing requirements, including regulatory approval. OpenAI and Pierre will continue operating separately until the transaction closes.

OpenAI acquires Pierre to boost AI-powered coding tools, aiming to strengthen Codex in the fast-moving AI development market. Pierre’s tools, including Code Storage, are already used by Codex users. The move follows earlier buys of Astral, Promptfoo, and Ona. With altcoins to watch gaining attention, OpenAI’s strategy could influence the fear and greed index among developers and investors.
