ChainCatcher report: At the GTC event in Berlin, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang introduced the company’s next-generation AI computing platform. Approximately 20 minutes into his speech, a protester climbed onto a chair and unfurled a banner, questioning why NVIDIA chips were found in Russian drones and demanding accountability for the environmental damage caused by AI expansion. The protest was organized by Greenpeace Germany, which projected the message “NVIDIA, Clean Up Your Dirty Business” onto the stage screen. As security prepared to remove the protester, Huang signaled for them to proceed gently and allowed the protester to finish speaking, acknowledging that these issues are important but requesting that the presentation be completed first. In August of this year, Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Agency discovered an NVIDIA Jetson Orin computing module inside a Russian S-71 cruise missile. The New York Times also reported that similar NVIDIA products were found in debris from Russian drones. Unlike expensive GPUs used for training large models, the Jetson series consists of compact, civilian-grade computers designed for robotics and machine vision, capable of local image recognition and processing. NVIDIA states that Jetson products are not sold in Russia and were never designed for military use; however, due to multiple resales through secondary markets, the company struggles to track their final destinations. A Greenpeace study released in September revealed that NVIDIA’s disclosed Scope 3 emissions—indirect emissions from its supply chain—have increased by 725% since 2020. While NVIDIA’s own operations are now powered entirely by renewable energy, many of its manufacturing partners in East Asia still rely on non-renewable sources. Greenpeace is calling on NVIDIA to extend its renewable energy commitment to its entire manufacturing supply chain by 2030 and to conduct independent audits of its global distributors to prevent chips from ending up in military equipment.

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang’s GTC speech in Berlin was interrupted by Greenpeace Germany, which criticized the use of NVIDIA chips in Russian drones and the environmental impact of AI. A banner read, “NVIDIA, clean up your dirty business.” Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence reportedly found NVIDIA Jetson modules in Russian drones. NVIDIA stated that the devices are not sold in Russia and are not intended for military use, but tracking their distribution is difficult. Greenpeace cited a 725% increase in NVIDIA’s indirect carbon emissions since 2020 and called for stronger CFT and MiCA compliance by 2030.
