BlockBeats news: On July 24, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang posted his first personal tweet, sharing an open letter titled “Open Weights and American AI Leadership,” co-signed by NVIDIA. Other signatories include Meta, Microsoft, Andreessen Horowitz, Hugging Face, IBM, Mistral AI, Palantir, Perplexity, Mozilla, and Y Combinator, among more than 20 technology companies and organizations.
The open letter argues that open-weight models—AI models that anyone can download, inspect, modify, and run on their own infrastructure—can expand access to the AI economy, strengthen market competition, and give users greater control. It acknowledges that open-weight models pose real risks, but asserts that the proper response is not to ban them, but rather to leverage openness to enhance AI safety and cybersecurity defenses. The letter urges policymakers to expand access to computing power, invest in shared training resources, and avoid imposing premature restrictions on open models. Jensen Huang stated, “The world needs both cutting-edge proprietary models and cutting-edge open models.”
