New evidence links Coinkite CTO Peter Gray to the RNG code associated with a BTC update involving the theft of over 1,800 BTC. Researchers found that Gray’s GPG key was used to sign commits from the anonymous 'switck' account. A Bitcoin developer warned Coinkite in May 2025 about the RNG flaw, but the alert was reportedly ignored. The code had been under scrutiny as early as April 2021. Amid this, new token listings continue to attract attention from traders and developers.

Odaily Planet Daily report: New evidence suggests that the anonymous switck account that wrote the LibNgU code may actually be Peter Gray, co-founder and CTO of Coinkite, whose code lies at the heart of the COLDCARD entropy failure incident. Researchers state that Gray’s GPG key signed dozens of switck commits, and other identifiers appear to link the two identities.

Bitcoin developer James O’Beirne said he warned Coinkite in May 2025 that LibNgU’s RNG implementation appeared suspicious and recommended its removal, but he noted the response was that any issues should have been detected already. Screenshots also show that users had raised questions about the LibNgU rewrite as early as April 2021.

If these findings are accurate, it means the engineer who introduced this code was later linked to the theft of over 1,800 BTC and had received direct warnings about the RNG implementation more than a year before the vulnerability was publicly disclosed. (Bitcoin News)
