NEAR Protocol has launched a protocol update allowing users to stake NEAR tokens to cover AI-related fees, including confidential inference and persistent agent operations. Staked tokens are converted into monthly compute credits without any funds being consumed. Users can unstake and retrieve their NEAR at any time. The feature supports all 43 AI models on NEAR AI, including those from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google. This AI + crypto development represents a significant step in expanding token utility within the NEAR ecosystem.

ChainThink reports that on July 31, NEAR Protocol announced the launch of a feature allowing users to pay for AI fees through staking—users can stake NEAR to cover costs for confidential inference and continuous-running agents without linking a credit card.

The staked NEAR will be converted into monthly computing power credits, which increase with the amount staked. The staked funds themselves are not consumed and can be withdrawn after unstaking.

All 43 models on NEAR AI are accessible through this staking mechanism, including models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and others.
