Mysten Labs announced Kevin Boon as its new CEO, replacing Evan Cheng, who will now lead the AI business unit. Boon, formerly President and CLO, was confirmed in a public letter on October 16. The AI division will operate independently, similar to the on-chain finance unit. Products will be built on Sui and Walrus, with Walrus’s mainnet set to launch in March 2025. A collaboration with Google Cloud, the Verifiable Agent Arbiter, was revealed on October 6. This AI and crypto development represents a key step in Mysten’s strategy.

ChainCatcher reports that Kevin Boon, President of Mysten Labs, has succeeded Evan Cheng as CEO of the Sui Layer 1 blockchain developer. Cheng will continue as Chief Technology Officer and personally lead the newly established internal AI business unit. In a public letter released on October 16, Cheng stated that Boon has accepted the position, and simultaneously announced the news on X. Boon previously served as Mysten Labs’ Chief Legal Officer before being promoted to President; Cheng noted, “I planned for this day when I appointed him as President.” The new AI division will have independent engineering, product development, and other functions to reduce external dependencies, following the model of Mysten’s on-chain finance business unit launched this summer, with a focus on agent-trust products and AI-native infrastructure. Cheng said this transition is intended to free up more time for technical leadership while continuing to support the Sui and Walrus ecosystems, “making my scope of responsibilities more manageable.” The AI business aims to enable agents to autonomously execute tasks within user-defined constraints, with related products and services anchored on Sui and Walrus. Walrus is Mysten’s decentralized storage protocol, which launched on mainnet in March 2025. Cheng specifically highlighted the Verifiable Agent Arbiter, developed in collaboration with Google Cloud, whose evidence layer was announced on October 6, designed to allow enterprises to prove their AI agents act within authorized boundaries. As designed, detailed agent records are stored in customer-controlled Google Cloud Storage, cryptographic proofs are stored on Walrus and coordinated on Sui; initial enterprise deployments will precede broader availability.
