The latest round of discussion over whether Musk will make a large-scale donation of his personal wealth has intensified on the social platform X. Nobel laureate in economics Daron Acemoglu publicly proposed that if Musk believes money will no longer matter by 2036, he should commit to donating his current wealth of approximately $1 trillion no later than 2036. Musk subsequently responded that he “will indeed do something similar,” but provided no further details.
Economists publicly propose a motion
Acemoglu stated on X that this commitment can test Musk’s genuine judgment regarding AI and the future of technology. He also suggested that the recipient charitable organizations should be reviewed by an independent body to ensure the project’s effectiveness and lack of overt ideological bias.
This statement directly addresses Musk’s previous remarks about AI and the meaning of future wealth. In a podcast episode aired at the end of 2025, Musk said he agrees with the value of helping others, but also described charity as “very difficult to do.”
The response is markedly different from past practices.
Musk’s response this time has been viewed by outsiders as a clear departure from his long-standing charitable style. The report noted that he has previously publicly criticized certain major philanthropists, including MacKenzie Scott, and argued that some of their donation directions could lead to negative outcomes.
Compared to other ultra-wealthy individuals who consistently make large donations, Musk has been more cautious in the realm of public philanthropy. Although he has frequently spoken about humanity’s future, technological advancement, and the public good, his actual donation path has long lacked clear and consistent public commitments.
The foundation is of considerable size, but its fund flows remain under scrutiny.
According to documents previously obtained by The New York Times, as of the end of 2025, the foundation under Musk’s name had assets of approximately $14 billion. However, the report noted that most of its donations were closely aligned with his own business interests.
Of the approximately $370 million in donations in 2024, about three-quarters went to a nonprofit organization in Texas managed by one of Musk’s key aides. The report notes that the schools and programs operated by this organization are located near several of Musk’s corporate facilities and serve areas where some employees live.
- Foundation size: Approximately $14 billion as of the end of 2025
- 2024 donation amount: approximately $370 million
- Primary flow: Most funds went to a nonprofit organization in Texas with related affiliations.
At present, Musk has not specified whether the so-called "similar actions" refer to a one-time donation, a phased arrangement, or gradual implementation through a foundation. Due to the absence of key details such as a timeline, percentage amounts, and intended recipients, this statement remains at a general principle level.
Additional information: The reported wealth of approximately $1 trillion refers to external estimates of Musk’s personal net worth, not a confirmed amount he has pledged to donate.
